Akoako

Visual brand Identity
Although te reo Māori is one of New Zealand’s official languages, everyday fluency remains low. Akoako aims to change this and supports organisations in actively integrating the language into their daily work and corporate culture.
How can a brand support Māori culture without claiming it as its own? The founder herself is not of Māori descent, nor are most of the students. Therefore, the brand identity had to be designed in a respectful and inclusive way, without imitating traditions.
We deliberately chose not to use the traditional colours of red, white and black found in classic Māori designs. Instead, we opted for a colour palette inspired by the landscapes of Aotearoa that belongs to everyone. Discreet fern shapes and linear patterns subtly allude to tradition, while the overall design remains modern, clear and distinct. The result is an inviting, culturally conscious brand that shows respect without crossing boundaries.
